2003 Manila-Marikina Symposium
Theme: City Revitalization Through Women's Transformation

The second Asian Metropolitan City Women's Symposium: City Revitalization through Women's Transformation was held on October 22-23, 2003 in Marikina City, Philippines, co-hosted by the Marikina City Government and Marikina Women's Development Foundation.

The participants included representatives from 8 Asian cities--Seoul, Japan, Taipei, Delhi, Manila (Marikina), Kuala Lumpur, Katmandu (Nepal), Suba (Fiji)-- experts on women's policy and women's NGO leaders.

The Symposium focused on the idea that promoting women's empowerment and gender equality have positive effects on city revitalization and poverty reduction. The symposium presentations included the following issues:

1) Transformed Women Effecting City Revitalization through Social Involvement
2) Women Advancing Habitat and Social Reproduction
3) Women Taking Active Role to Ensure Women's Well-Being---Safety and Security
4) Women Initiating Measures for the Protection of the Environment
5) Women Pushing for Legal Aid and Legislation for Women
6) Women Gearing for Leadership and Governance

2002 Seoul Symposium

The first Asian Metropolitan City Women's Symposium: Mainstreaming Women's Social Participation was held on September 4-6, 2002 in Seoul, Korea, co-hosted by Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Women's Foundation, and organized by Korean Women's Development Institute, in celebration of Seoul Women's Plaza's opening year.

The Symposium attracted 500 people including representatives from 9 Asian cities--Bangkok, Beijing, Delhi, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Taipei, Tokyo, Singapore--  experts on women's policy and women's NGO leaders.

The Symposium focused on Asian metropolitan cities' gender mainstreaming strategies in government policies pertaining to the following agenda:

1) Women's Human Resource Development and Economic Empowerment
 - Case Studies of Bangkok, Beijing, Delhi, Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo
2) Work and Family Balance
 - Case Studies of Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei
